This report summarizes expert panel presentations and large and small group discussions focused on identifying educational opportunities as part of a public education effort to prevent obesity. Panel 1 reported on the epidemiology of obesity and cardiovascular disease, including obesity in both children and adults. Panel 2 reported on school-based, family-based, and community-based obesity prevention programs. Panel 3 addressed a number of issues in public education about weight and obesity, including: nutrition in adolescence; obesity and the hazards of treatment; smoking and weight; the role of physical activity in obesity management and prevention; and sociocultural aspects of obesity. Panel 4 examined communication strategies for public education, including audience segmentation as a strategy for targeting adults and communication strategies for targeting children and adolescents. Small group reports address special demographic issues pertaining to children, adolescents, adults, older adults, and minority group populations.
