McPhedran, N. Tait
This survey of the history of medical education and medical schools in Canada contains chapters on each of Canada's medical schools in chronological order of establishment based on visits to each school and interviews with faculty and administration there. An opening chapter sums up the salient facts of the entire history of medical education by dividing the past two centuries into six major periods: pioneer period (1822-1885), dawning science (1885-1910), Flexner Report to the Depression (1910-1929), an incubation period (1930-1960), ferment and expansion (1960-1975), and consolidation (1976-1992). The next sections describe the following institutions: McGill University (Quebec); University of Montreal (Quebec); University of Toronto (Ontario); Laval University (Quebec); Queen's University (Ontario); Dalhousie University (Nova Scotia); University of Western Ontario; University of Manitoba; University of Alberta; University of Saskatchewan; University of Ottawa (Ontario); University of British Columbia; Sherbrooke University (Quebec); McMaster University (Ontario); Memorial University (Newfoundland); and University of Calgary. A final chapter contains some personal observations as well as ruminations on probable future developments. Includes an index and a list of interviewees by school. Contains over 350 references. (JB)
