This volume consists of an annotated bibliography of children's literature about the states bordering on the Great Lakes. The items are grouped by state, and each listing includes suggested learning activities. The states included are Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin. The 95 literature selections about Illinois focus on notable individuals, the exploration and settlement of the state, and the contrast between rural and metropolitan lifestyles. The section lists a significant body of literature about Abraham Lincoln. Many titles address the significant contributions made by African Americans. Many of the 86 entries for Indiana present the roles in Indiana history of Native Americans, particularly the Miami. Others focus on the Hoosier state's natural resources, geography, culture, and famous citizens. The focus of most of the 89 Michigan selections is on the Great Lakes, reflecting Michigan's unique geographic position and the influence of the lakes on all aspects of Michigan life. The French and the Indian legends, explorers' journals and the settlers' diaries reflect the all important presence of the great waters. The section on Minnesota contains 161 materials reflecting the diversity of the state's geography and cultures. The 120 literature selections for Ohio reflect a strong sense of history, and the contributions of prestigious individuals dominate the materials. Wisconsin's 126 entries cover the Northwoods traditions and agricultural heritage better that the state's urban milieus. Historical fiction is more plentiful than contemporary fiction.
