Succession in administrative positions can affect leadership at a school and educational effectiveness. This book examines succession not as an event, but as a complex social process marked by interactions among a school's faculty and their new principal. The first three chapters comprise the first section and cover the foundations of leader succession in theory and research. In chapter 1, topics include principal succession, socialization, and professional socialization research. Chapter 2 covers leader succession research including effects, boundary delineation, and leadership and managerial issues. Chapter 3 covers the conceptual roots of organizational socialization interaction. The second section includes chapters 4 through 6 and offers the experiences of principals in succession. Chapter 4 covers the faculty perspective in principal succession. Chapter 5 presents an outsider successor's personal view of succession. Chapter 6 includes an analysis of research on the professional and organizational socialization of principals. The third section contains chapters 7 and 8 and covers the future in research and practice in leader succession and socialization.
