Making Diversity Happen: Controversies and Solutions.

Drawing on discussions at a conference hosted by the Center for Creative Leadership, this book presents a synthesis of the views of many of today's leading diversity practitioners and thinkers on how to develop diversity in organizations. Instead of presenting a session-by-session account of the conference, the book offers chapters on each of four major themes identified after a review of conference data, including audiotapes and videotapes of the sessions; notes from small-group discussions; the results of a preconference poll that asked participants about practices and controversies central to developing a diversity initiative; the responses to a questionnaire administered at the end of the conference which asked participants for their learnings and their plans for next steps; and the results of a postconference poll sent out 2 months after the meeting. Individual chapters focus on these four themes: (1) What does diversity mean to organizations? (chapter 1); (2) How can organizational commitment to diversity be developed? (chapter 2); (3) How should a diversity initiative proceed? (chapter 3); and (4) What are some important diversity practices (chapter 4). The book concludes with a discussion of what the next steps in achieving diversity should be (chapter 5). Conference information is appended. (NB)
