This manual is designed to supply the information needed to enable schools, school districts, county offices of education, trainers of educators, and others to offer the independent study instructional strategy to students at all grade levels through high school. It contains the California state guidelines and legal requirements for independent study. Thirteen chapters cover the following: an introduction to independent study; the legal basis for a local board policy on independent study; students who may benefit from independent study; staffing and organizational structure; implementation or expansion of independent study; ongoing operations; home independent study; attendance accounting and the audit trail; special needs groups; counseling and guidance support services; curriculum development and instruction; assessment of students; and formats for evaluation of independent study. A wide range of sample items are provided, including suggested local school policy and administrative regulations or procedures as well as instructional and evaluation materials. Appendixes include 86 references, texts of legal citations for independent study, a program advisory on adult education, and an index. (YLB)
