11/12 F.L.A.S.H.: A Curriculum Supplement in Family Life and Sexual Health for Grades 11 & 12.

This curriculum supplement is designed for high school juniors and seniors to augment the edition designed for freshmen and sophomores. The document is divided into 18 units. Unit 1 is on critical thinking, and serves to help the student distinguish among values, feelings, fallacies, and facts. The next five units are grouped together under child and adolescent sexual development. Under this section gender roles, and gender orientation are discussed with relation to the individual and to society. The seventh unit discusses fertility and infertility. Units 8 through 11 deal with unplanned pregnancy. Subjects included are abortion, adoption, parenting, and parenting options and society. Unit 12 describes contraception and the effects for individuals and society. Units 13 through 15 discuss the human immunodeficiency virus and acquired immune deficiency syndrome or AIDS. Unit 13 focuses on the latest that is known about HIV/AIDS and on testing. Unit 14 describes the disease's impact on the friends and families of victims, and unit 15, its impact on society. Unit 16 examines the sexual response system. Unit 17 is devoted to abstinence, attitude, and activism. Unit 18 discusses lifelong sexuality and concludes the supplement. The document includes a section on preparing the teach the F.L.A.S.H. program and a brief review of the lessons from the supplement for use in grades 9 and 10. Field trip report instructions and a sign up sheet are included. Eight appendices include sample letters to older students, parents or guardians, Washington state laws, audio-visual information, a glossary, and community resources. (DK)
