Using Study Guides: An Approach to Self-Access.

This report describes an approach to self-access work with first-year college students at Hong Kong University, explains the rejection to this approach, and outlines the current development of study guides for students in line with the adoption of an approach that seeks to provide a guided independence for students. The idea behind the study guides is that students can use them as models of how to plan their own schemes of work. They are meant primarily to be an initiation to self-direction. Students at Hong Kong University were asked to create their own study guides, which met with varying degrees of success. Only two groups of students were able to develop a study guide. It was found that some students were not yet ready for self-access learning. (JL)
