Wood Block and Toy Project. Designed for Diversely-Abled Senior Volunteers.

This document describes a volunteer work project designed for nursing home and day-care center persons with minimal physical skills. Potential users of the project are cautioned to plan carefully for the host location where the project will be conducted, as the location must be easily accessible to older adults who may be handicapped and who may require transportation by agency vans or special buses. Users also are advised to provide attentive and caring supervision. The history of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) Woodblock and Toy Project is briefly reviewed, as is the role of the senior center in St. Cloud, Minnesota that shared its woodworking shop as a host and co-sponsor of the project. There are three major sections of this document. The first focuses on the nature and organization of the project and includes orientation suggestions. The second section concentrates on operational suggestions. This section discusses how to finance the project; how to obtain or make necessary materials, including scrap lumber, wheels, cloth pouches for the woodblocks, and child safe paints; how to store and inventory the products; how to distribute the products; and rewards for volunteers. The third section of the document includes descriptions, diagrams, and dimensions for basic woodblocks; a variety of cars and trucks; rainbow stacking rings; flip-flop pounding toys; and a mini-train set.
