Lost in the Woods: Child Survival for Parents and Teachers.
This book aims to prepare children in the event they become lost in the outdoors. An opening story, designed to capture children's attention, outlines safety protocols. These protocols are: (1) keep yourself warm, particularly your head; (2) stay in one place, preferably an open space, so searchers can find you; (3) make a bed of branches or other natural materials to keep your body out of contact with the cold ground; (4) if you are with another person, cuddle up to keep warm; and (5) put out something bright for searchers to see. Several class activities illustrate the safety protocols and allow the children to experience the procedures' value. A final section offers suggestions and recommendations to parents concerning ways they can prepare their children for being lost. A 20-minute companion film is briefly described. (SV)
