This report summarizes information about Indiana's children and the institutions that touch their lives. Chapter 1 examines current demographic trends that relate to Indiana families. Chapter 2 reviews work and income patterns among adults and working teens, and reports on youths' aspirations for future careers. The growing issue of poverty among Indiana families is discussed in chapter 3. Chapter 4 describes the families and institutions that abuse and neglect youngsters in their care. Chapter 5 discusses the child welfare system that is designed to protect Indiana children. The status of Indiana's schools and the educational attainment of Indiana's adults are covered in chapter 6, while chapter 7 contains data about Indiana's schools today and in the past, and a comparison of the Indiana students' test scores with the scores of students in other states. Chapter 8 reviews participation in educational programs designed to assist youngsters with special needs. Chapters 9 and 10 examine the health and well-being of Indiana's children. Chapters 11 and 12 review adolescent sexuality, teen pregnancy, and sexually transmitted diseases; and summarize the findings of several national and Indiana studies on the use of tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs. Chapter 13 addresses topics that relate to children's injuries and deaths, including vehicle accidents and homicides. Three appendices provide a description of the Indiana Step Ahead initiative, definitions of the terms used in the report, and a set of tables containing selected indicators of child and family well-being for each of Indiana's counties.
