This book contains background information and extensive appendices to be used for the purpose of enrolling in an Indian tribe. Chapter 1, "Why Enroll in an Indian Tribe?" explains that enrollment in a tribe often determines eligibility of American Indians for certain government programs (including educational programs). Chapter 2, "Who is an Indian," and Chapter 3, "What is an Indian Tribe?" discuss the various definitions of Indians and tribes used by different federal agencies, states, and tribes themselves. Chapter 4, "Where Are the Indians?" lists the Indian and Alaska Native populations by state. Chapter 5, "How to Enroll," provides suggestions for researching Indian ancestry and contacting tribal enrollment offices. The majority of the book is devoted to the following appendices: (1) lists of federally recognized Indian tribes, petitioners for federal acknowledgement, and other Indian tribes and groups; (2) list of Alaska Native entities; (3) membership requirements from selected tribal constitutions; (4) constitutions of the Native villages of Dot Lake and Eklutna, Alaska Native entities; (5) Bureau of Indian Affairs area offices; (6) responses to enrollment information requests from Bureau of Indian Affairs agencies and area offices; (7) forms for enrollment from federally recognized groups, tribal enrollment offices, and nonfederally recognized groups; (8) forms and instructions for securing certificates of Indian blood; (9) useful publications for researching enrollment and bloodlines; and (10) state Indian commissions.
