The Rural Adventures in Workplace Literacy project at the College of Eastern Utah (San Juan Campus) assessed the literacy and basic needs of employees, developed curriculum materials, and provided training to employees in six industries in southeastern Utah and northern Arizona. Nine industries were contacted; six participated and were firmly committed to the project. Curriculum materials and/or software programs were developed to accommodate 120 hours of literacy and basic skills training in each of these areas: recreation/hospitality services, office occupations, and computer applications. The program (given the local title, Workplace Initiative for Skills Enhancement--WISE) proved to be highly successful and beneficial to the Four Corners region.
