This report, by the U.S. representative to the conference, presents observations on and basic results of the 1992 Seoul International Conference on the Role of the University in the Asia/Pacific Age, as well as the conference agenda and program, the minutes of the meeting, and other related documents. The conference convened 51 representatives from 18 countries in the Asia/Pacific region, as well as the United States and 2 international organizations, to examine the most appropriate ways of increasing the cooperation between the higher education institutions in the region. Topics of the meetings included faculty and student exchange among the universities, the exchange of academic information among international universities, and means of enhancing mutual cooperation between universities and business/industry. The paper concludes with brief observations concerning the need for the United States to actively sponsor students and staff in Asia and the Pacific Rim countries, and research needs in such areas as orientation of foreign students. Appendices contain a questionnaire survey on the impediments to university student exchange, a list of the participants and observers, and the framework of University Mobility in the Asia/Pacific trial programs.
