The Employer's Guide to Career Counseling Services of the California Community Colleges.
Health & Education Communication Consultants, Redwood City, CA.
California's 107 community colleges offer more than 300 different career and vocational education programs and enroll approximately 1.5 million students annually. Each college employs experienced career counselors and maintains an extensive battery of career assessment tools and materials. Developed to assist California employers in meeting their career counseling and job training/retraining needs, this guide details career counseling options and provides a comprehensive directory of services available from every community college in the state. The guide is organized into two major sections. The first section, "Using the Career Counseling Services," explains how to use the guide and how to arrange statewide contracts for services; provides an overview of community colleges; underscores the importance of career counseling, outlining its processes and goals; reviews the career counseling and guidance services available (i.e., personal counseling, employee assessment, vocational planning, job seeking skills development, information on labor market trends, job development/job placement, and small business development); and presents a series of questions designed to help employers evaluate services offered. This section concludes with brief case studies describing how three employers have used specific services at community colleges. The second section, "College Profiles," contains a directory of career counseling services available at each community college in California, offering information on contact people, facilities, staff, specific services, eligibility, assessment materials, and related services. A state and Los Angeles area map providing the location of each community college is included. (JSP)
