Elliott, Mary Ann
This report describes functions of the University of Maryland (UM) program, Office of Public Service which focuses on developing a special liaison relationship with the private sector in support of the State's expanding initiative in economic development. The Office provides a single point of access for University resources and services in what is a system of eleven institutions and four major research and service components. The Office was established in 1980, and its responsibilities include maintaining the UM public service hotline, producing the biannual UM public service directory, "Toward Closer Ties," and advertising their availability and that of the UM services to which they are linked. In 1988 the Office produced a brochure, "Partners in Progress," describing UM resources for business and industry which was so popular that it was revised and reissued in 1990. The Office responds to inquiries and specific requests for help and information from governmental agencies, organizations, businesses, and private citizens. On a biannual basis the Office plans, develops and coordinates symposia and conferences featuring outreach activities. The report includes job descriptions of the two staff positions in the office, a copy of the brochure, and a copy of the 1988-1989 issue of the directory which lists UM resources under such categories as economic development, society, education, culture, libraries, and health.
