Content Connections: Creating Interdisciplinary Units.
Alaska State Dept. of Education, Juneau. Office of Basic Education.
The interdisciplinary approach to education applies methods and language from more than one discipline to examine a central theme, issue, problem, topic, or experience, and is utilized in order to enhance the ability of students to acquire the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of various disciplines. This guide to developing interddisciplinary units is organized into a series of seven steps: (1) problem selection and concept outline; (2) content outline; (3) thinking processes; (4) planning prototype; (5) instructional objectives; (6) learning activities; and (7) evaluation procedures. Appendices consist of timelines; concept and content outline forms, planning prototype sheets, a worksheet for instructional objectives and activities, and an assessment planning chart; unit samples submitted and selected as examples for interdisciplinary unit development; and a guide to program support.
