Learning Resource Units for Young Children: A Curriculum for Preschool Children.

These learning resource units are based on the philosophy and goals for early childhood education which have been established for the school district of Pittsburgh. They are intended to assist teachers in planning for preschool children's educational experience. Activities in the learning resource units should be selected in response to children's needs, interests, and abilities, and teachers should not feel limited to the themes and activities presented in this document. The units are divided into expressive arts and thematic units. The expressive arts include visual arts, music and movement, creative writing, and literature. It is intended that the expressive arts be woven by the teacher into each of the thematic units. The themes provide a holistic approach for the learner and a way to organize learning based on children's interests. Themes include "all about me," community helpers, transportation, farms, animals, buildings, colors, shapes, and seasons. Each of the learning resource units specifies: (1) suggested time to be spent on the theme; (2) learning objectives; (3) goals of quality education; (4) career competencies; (5) major areas of study; (6) learning activities; (7) materials and resources; (8) expected achievement; (9) student outcome statements; and (10) procedures for evaluation. Appendices include a compilation of fingerplays, rhymes, and songs; a list of more than 200 children's books, organized by theme; and philosophical statements about early childhood education by the school district of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
