A generic staff development model for kindergarten through sixth-grade child care programs is described. Recommendations for the what, when, and how of staff development activities are based on a review of the literature and a needs assessment survey administered in two school districts and a private sector, school-age child care program in California. The survey questionnaire focused on the term "staff development," current opportunities for staff development, recommended topics for staff development, and implementation suggestions. Forty-five questionnaires were distributed, with a 60 percent response rate. None of the respondents identified themselves primarily as support staff. Suggestions are offered for: (1) staff development topics such as discipline, first aid, stress, games, arts and crafts, child development, families; (2) monthly activities; and (3) provision of financial stipends for participation.
