No Surprises: The Guidelines Approach to Evaluation of Pre-Service Student Teachers.

This paper describes guidelines developed by Illinois State University (ISU) elementary supervisors for the mid-term and final evaluations of preservice student teachers. Evaluation instruments were developed from campus-based and field-based outcomes of clinical experiences and are used as a formative and summative basis for a precisely defined assessment of the student teacher. The guidelines are provided to the student teachers prior to the evaluation period. Because the guidelines are specific, measurable, and comprehensive, the students can use them to check their own progress and as suggestions for improvement. The attachments include: the ISU student teaching evaluation guidelines on professional performance and personal characteristics; the midterm evaluation of teacher candidates checklist; and the final evaluation form.
