A Status Report on Hunger and Homelessness in America's Cities: 1990. A 30-City Survey.
Waxman, Laura DeKoven; Reyes, Lilia M.
To assess the status of hunger and homelessness in urban America during 1990, the U.S. Conference of Mayors surveyed the 30 major cities whose mayors are members of its Task Force on Hunger and Homelessness. This report summarizes survey findings. The survey sought information from each city on the following questions: (1) the demand for emergency food assistance and emergency shelter and the capacity of local agencies to meet that demand; (2) the causes of hunger and homelessness and the demographics of the populations experiencing these problems; (3) public attitudes toward homeless people; (4) the status of the recession in cities and its impact on hunger and homelessness; and (5) the outlook for 1991. To respond to the survey instrument, city officials collected and compiled information from a wide range of public and private agencies knowledgeable about the problems of hunger and homelessness in their communities. The data were collected from the cities for the period of November 1, 1989, to October 31, 1990, and were supplemented with data available from the Bureau of the Census and the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Statistical data are presented in five tables and one graph. A copy of the information questionnaire and a list of Task Force members are appended. (AF)
