A Brief Report of Statistics: 1988 Survey of School Library Media Programs in Wisconsin.
Wisconsin State Dept. of Public Instruction, Madison. Div. of Library Services.
This report presents some of the more significant results of a 1988 survey of all Wisconsin public schools which received responses from 1,790 schools (90%). Designed to determine the status of library media programs in the state's schools, the 12-page survey asked for over 450 pieces of information about the library media center, its staffing, services, operations, and future goals. This report presents data in 14 tables: (1-3) number of schools with a central library media center (LMC), an LMC that is open 4 hours or less per school day, and/or an LMC staffed by a professional library media specialist; (4) the ratio of professional staff to students; (5) the number of schools where library media staff coordinate library skills instruction with classroom curriculum; help curriculum committees select media and media activities; integrate resources and activities into instructional units; help students locate information and resources; provide reading, listening, and viewing guidance to students; provide interlibrary loan service to students; coordinate in-house production of instructional materials; participate in textbook selection; coordinate cable and other television transmission and use and video production; help students use computers; and coordinate use of computers in instruction; (6) types of materials accessible to students on open shelves; and (7-14) the number of LMCs that charge fines for overdue materials; have a telephone; have an automated circulation system and/or an automated card catalog; provide database searching for students; have videodisc players, CD-ROM drives, and/or half inch VHS videocassette recorders. All of the tables are broken down by educational levels. The complete survey results are available to persons needing the data for research. (MAB)
