The Admission and Placement of Students from the Republic of Hungary. Report of a Workshop (Hungary, May 1990).

This workshop report examines the educational system in Hungary. First, the report reviews the country's history and its population. Next, Hungary's educational system is outlined, including its general structure, grading scale, academic calendar, and language of instruction. Primary and preprimary education are analyzed next, followed by an examination of Hungary's secondary education system, including the types of academic secondary schools available, the country's technical secondary schools, vocational schools, continuation schools, and the admission requirements for each category. Next, Hungary's higher education institutions are reviewed. This examination covers areas such as admission, program structure, tertiary graduation requirements and degrees, specific programs (military and police training, theological colleges, medical studies), and graduate training and research. The report then discusses Hungary's teacher education programs for all levels through secondary school. Finally, guidelines for U.S. admissions officers are presented to assist them in placing students from Hungary within their institutions. Appendices contain a list of Hungary's state and privately controlled institutions and their addresses, as well as institutional profiles. Contains an index, a glossary of Hungarian terms, and a 24-item bibliography. (GLR)
