1990 Report: A Report to the Governor on the Status of Alaskans Who Experience Developmental Disabilities.
Alaska Governor's Council for the Handicapped and Gifted, Fairbanks.
This report was prepared in response to Public Law 100-146, the Amendments to the Developmental Disabilities Assistance Act, which requires that information and recommendations be made available concerning public policy to promote independence, productivity, and integration of people with developmental disabilities. Information was gathered via interviews with 281 people with developmental disabilities and their families; two teleconferences with a total of 65 people giving testimony; and public forums held in Bethel, Anchorage, Wasilla, Soldotna, Fairbanks, Kotzebue, and Ketchikan. The first section of the report describes the methodology used; the second section provides accounts of each of the seven public forums; and the third section assembles the facts, critical issues, and recommendations and organizes them into the following issue areas: civil rights, education, employment, health care, housing, income, individual and family supports, and systems issues.
