The Development of Communication Competence during Organizational Assimilation.
Cude, Roger L.
Focusing on the developmental nature of organizational communication competence, this literature review draws on the communication competence and organizational assimilation literatures to propose models of the process of developing organizational communication competence. The paper's first section presents an overview of research exploring interpersonal communication competence, followed by a more extensive review of the literature on organizational communication competence. The second section reviews literature on assimilation processes as it relates to communication competence. Finally, the third section examines the process of developing communication competence during assimilation. The paper suggests that the construct of organizational communication must be viewed as multidimensional and dynamic; hence, the proposed models focus on the development of organizational communication competence rather than assuming all organizational members naturally possess appropriate levels of communication knowledge, skill, and motivation to engage in effective workplace interaction. Ninety-six references are attached. (SR)
