Crisis Management in Schools.
Everett, Susan M.
Crisis management in the schools is discussed in this position paper. These topics are addressed: the origins of crisis intervention in the schools; the effectiveness of the crisis team approach; establishment of the crisis team; primary components of existing crisis intervention plans; and the role of the school counselor in crisis intervention. Based on a literature review and personal experience the following recommendations are made: (1) more research is needed to determine which crisis intervention procedures are effective; (2) the crisis management plan should be applicable to a variety of tragic incidents; (3) the crisis plan should have responsibilities designated to specific people so that it can be executed without delay; (4) documentation and recordkeeping forms need to be developed and published; (5) schools must train and utilize their staffs more effectively; (6) peer counselors should not lead group discussions during the aftermath of a crisis; (7) suggested methods of notifying people about the tragedy need to be improved or revised; (8) every school building should have a trained spokesperson; (9) the media should be denied access to the school building during a crisis; (10) school districts could easily be better prepared for dealing with emergency or violent situations; (11) evaluation procedures and accompanying forms need to be developed; and (12) all school counselors should participate in assisting students during a crisis.
