This extensive curriculum guide was written in conjunction with the San Diego Arts Festival of Soviet Arts in 1989. It aimed to provide teachers with insights and ideas about arts in the Soviet Union before, during, and after the Arts Festival. A curriculum model is presented at the beginning of the guide to illustrate how the lessons were perceived in the overall plan of integrating the Festival, state curriculum frameworks, and racial ethnic groups. The curriculum guide is divided into three sections: the visual arts, the performing arts, and integrating the arts. There also is a general introduction and a concluding section on teaching methods. The latter gives suggestions for evaluating the arts. The visual arts section describes characteristics of Soviet art and provides information and lesson activities on the following: Folk Art; Painting and Drawing; Metal Work; Architecture; Laquerware; and Faberge Mineral Carving and Imperial Eggs. In the Performing Arts section, a brief history of Russian-Soviet music is presented with lesson activities about jazz, classical, and Russian folk music. The section on theatre arts deals with theme recognition through character identification and explores drama in the theatre, on the movie screen, and puppetry. Aesthetic values of folk dance and the ballet are addressed in the section on dance. The final section provides activities for integrating language arts, mathematics, science, social science, physical education, foreign language, and vocational education. (KM)
