Implementing the Mathematics Standards. Monograph No. 3. Spring 1990. Standards 10 through 13.
Underhill, Bob, Ed.
This monograph is the third in a series of three dealing with the curriculum and evaluation standards for grades K-4 as promulgated by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM). The publication of the standards marks a new guidepost in the evolution of mathematics education and signals the impact of the information society upon all citizens through the recognition of the importance of the mathematical skills involving problem solving, estimation, reasonableness of computed results, and use of technology among others. Included in this third volume are: (1) introductory information concerning various perspectives on the teaching and learning of elementary mathematics; (2) essays, sample problems, and activities dealing with Standard #10, measurement; (3) activities revolving around Standard #11, statistics and probability; (4) sample problems and activities concerning Standard #12, fractions and decimals; (5) reflections and activities involving Standard #13, patterns and relationships; (6) additional activities designed for the enrichment of mathematical thought; and (7) appendices that contain ideas for alternative evaluation methods and for practical uses of the NCTM publication, "The Arithmetic Teacher."
