This resource guide includes abstracts of 90 papers presented at the conference. Section 1, "Understanding Students At-Risk," includes 17 abstracts that emphasize the need for a comprehensive set of services that can respond to the diverse needs of at-risk students. Section 2, "Preventing and Reducing Incidence of At-Risk," includes 17 abstracts that focus on the need to identify and address those conditions that place a student at risk early in the schooling process. Section 3, "Changing the System," includes 15 abstracts that focus on cooperative, systematic efforts to improve conditions in the home, the school, and the media. Section 4, "Strategies and Programs for Working with At-Risk Youth," includes 22 abstracts that describe unique dropout prevention programs and strategies from preschool through college. Section 5, "Utilizing Community Resources," includes nine abstracts that describe community-based strategies that use businesses, citizens, and parents. Section 6, "Facilitating Parent Involvement," includes 10 abstracts that describe studies and programs focusing on the following types of parent involvement: (1) basic parenting obligations; (2) school obligations; (3) parent involvement at school; (4) parent involvement in learning activities at home; and (5) parent involvement that relates to decision-making or advisory roles.
