Visual and Performing Arts in Florida Community Colleges. Program Review.
Florida State Board of Community Colleges, Tallahassee.
In 1991, the Florida State Community College System conducted a statewide review of its visual and performing arts instructional programs. As part of the review process, existing data sets were analyzed, three advisory committee meetings and five regional hearings were held, and a survey was distributed to all 24 colleges in the system. In addition, a survey was distributed to secondary school supervisors to evaluate linkages with community colleges. Among the issues examined in the review were the role of the arts; the degree to which entering freshmen have the skills necessary to profit from the programs; community college relations with public schools; the status of course articulation with the state university system; the performance of community college graduates in state universities as compared with native university students; academic advising; the extent to which professional exchanges take place between community college and university faculty; the effectiveness of counseling services for students seeking to transfer; the distribution of minority faculty; equipment needs; and the roles of the Florida School of the Arts, St. Johns River Community College, and the New World School of the Arts. As a result of the review, it was recommended that the system: (1) schedule regular meetings with secondary school supervisors; (2) schedule meetings with university arts faculties to discuss course articulation and portfolio evaluation; (3) seek to recruit more minority faculty; (4) explore avenues to exhibit student art; (5) examine the possibility of employing computer-assisted instructional methods; and (6) assess the need for an associate in fine arts degree. Appendixes include the survey instruments, the names of hearing attendees, and a list of 12 recommendations. (JMC)
