This resource guide is designed to assist local schools in South Dakota to evaluate and improve their library media programs. The information provided is non-regulatory in nature (with the exception of information from the "Administrative Rules of South Dakota"), and represents a foundation for building a quality library media program. The guide is divided into nine sections: (1) South Dakota guidelines (administrative rules related to school and state libraries, recommendations of the Library Rules Taskforce); (2) library media center policies and procedures (collection development policy, mission statement, goals and objectives, sample "services" plan, weeding policy, copyright guidelines and sample policy, outline of manual of procedures); (3) personnel (school library media specialist, technician, aide, student assistants, evaluation instrument); (4) budget (average prices for library media materials, budget recommendations from national, regional, and state associations); (5) facilities; (6) services (outline of library media services, curriculum development, the library and the exceptional child, teacher assistance teams, public relations, community resource file, school and public library cooperation, evaluation of library media services, bibliography of selection tools, inventory of materials, weeding and disposal of materials); (7) microcomputers in library management (reasons to automate, types of generic software, preparing for automation, questions and answers about the South Dakota Library Network, a glossary of computer terms, resources); (8) professional resources (librarian's professional library, library media professional associations, continuing education opportunities, teacher's resource center); and (9) appendix (services of South Dakota State Library, taxonomies of library involvement in curriculum, personal development for library media specialists, checklist for library media programs, additional sample collection development policy, evaluation checklist for audiovisual equipment, evaluation form for audiovisual software and microcomputer software, basic reference collection glossary).
