Identification of Gifted Children in Ohio: Annual Report.
Ohio State Dept. of Education, Columbus. Div. of Special Education.
This report provides information regarding identification and education of gifted children in Ohio, based on data obtained from school districts on June 15, 1990. The report presents data on the number of gifted children who were identified, who received services in state-funded units, who received services in locally funded units, and who did not receive appropriate services. The report also considers duplicated counts, as students' abilities are identified in four separate areas (superior cognitive ability, specific academic ability, creative thinking, and visual and/or performing arts.) A total of 202,726 children were identified as gifted, or 11.49% of the student population (including duplicated counts.) Students receiving services through state-funded units totalled 25,831 while locally funded units served 50,292 students and 126,603 children were not served. Data are presented in order to evaluate the state's progress toward: identification of all gifted children in accordance with state legislative mandates; provision of services for identified gifted children; and the future needs for state resources.
