Development of an Articulation Program for the Elementary School Emotionally Handicapped Program. Final Report.
McKinney, Rhonda C.
A 10-week program was developed to provide structure, consistency, and organization in the classrooms of 30 elementary-age emotionally handicapped (EH) students. The program sought to assist the students with staying on task, becoming structured, and reducing inappropriate behavior. The program contained two basic components (a behavioral management system and a task development program) that were consistently applied by three classroom teachers. The behavior management component utilized the "Levels System," in which students progress through four levels based on individual targeted behavioral needs and students are awarded certain privileges based on their level. Orientation workshops were held for the principal, assistant principal, counselor, EH teachers, EH teacher aides, bus drivers, students, and other personnel. The intervention reduced the occurrence of off-task inappropriate behavior to 30% of the time in target group members. Student attitudes concerning themselves and the EH program improved. Appendices include survey forms, various evaluation forms, administrative forms, and information about the Levels System. (10 references) (JDD)
