Time Management: Managing Instructional Time To Enhance Program Congruence.
Universal, Ted; And Others
This document is intended to provide school districts with information and ideas to help them develop districtwide philosophies concerning congruent planning, organize for efficient program management, create time for teachers to plan collaboratively for instruction, and develop documentation to monitor student progress. To enlist teacher support and commitment for the congruent planning process, districts must offer training programs, provide for summer curriculum alignment projects, jointly establish and refine program goals and performance objectives, encourage sharing of units and lesson plans, demonstrate workable strategies, involve all teachers in planning, and share interdisciplinary themes for study units. To facilitate effective planning, an overall procedure or program should be developed and roles should be clarified. Ten ideas are presented for aiding this process; 10 more are suggested for helping teachers find time to collaborate without shortchanging students. Seven other ideas are suggested for documentation, which should be student-centered, efficient, and instructionally meaningful. The 13 appendices detail major issues regarding congruence planning; offer tips for teachers; present sample planning, cooperative teaching, and scheduling models; outline collaborative teaching activities; and present a sample cooperative planning document.
