Guide to the Effective Implementation of Attendance Services in South Carolina.
South Carolina State Dept. of Education, Columbia.
One of the South Carolina Department of Education's foremost responsibilities is to initiate attendance improvement programs. Among the services offered to carry out this responsibility is assistance to attendance personnel in developing professional approaches to absenteeism. This guide contains information on the role and function of attendance supervisors and includes statutes that serve as legal references. The primary objective of attendance services is to ensure enrollment of all children. Major functions of attendance supervisors include providing prevention programs and identifying patterns of absenteeism. Characteristics of attendance, personal problems, behavioral problems, and child abuse are outlined to help identify the potential dropout. Early professional action can take the form of steps like home visitations and referrals. The education of an attendance supervisor should include general education, guidance, and counseling. A competent supervisor should be able (among other things) to communicate and to interpret student behavior. Certification requirements and a sample job description are given. Ten questions and answers serve as an outline for presenting a program about attendance services. (EJS)
