SQ3R: A Must for Teaching Science Concepts to Sixth Graders?

This study investigated the effectiveness of the SQ3R study skill technique in the science education of sixth grade students. Subjects, 30 students in a control group and 19 students in the experimental group comprising two separate classrooms in a culturally mixed urban elementary school, used the science text "Gateways to Science" and completed publisher-made tests for three of the chapters. Subjects in the experimental group received instruction in the SQ3R technique in conjunction with the science unit while the control group received no training in study skills. Results of the three chapter tests indicated that subjects in the experimental group received significantly higher grades on the tests than subjects in the control group.
