Strategies for Improving Main Idea Identification in Expository Text while Improving Reading Comprehension.
Gump, Judith G.
A special summer program was developed to increase five elementary students' abilities to locate the main idea in written text. The researcher worked with the students 3 hours each morning for 8 weeks, devoting approximately 2 hours of that time to reading comprehension by teaching correct strategies for identifying the main idea. Question and answer sequencing along with repeated readings and making predictions were among the strategies implemented to improve main idea identification. Precision teaching was used to involve students in the learning process and to monitor improvement of daily scores. Results indicated increased levels of achievement for all members of the target group. (One table is included and 18 references are attached. Appendixes include: Story Framing, Logarithmic Chart, Daily Task Sheet, Pictures Can Reinforce Main Idea Identification, Identifying the Main Idea in Another Student's Short Story, Main Idea Sentence Strip, Semantic Mapping, and Academic Methods/Organizational and Management Techniques Pre/Posttest Scores.)
