The purpose of this guide is to provide teachers with information that will help them better understand how to teach science. In addition, this resource is intended to be a tool in assisting teachers in developing their science curricula and in planning their instruction. The instructional approach presented reflects the philosophy that students learn best through hands-on, inquiry-oriented experiences. This guide was developed as part of the South Carolina Basic Skills Assessment Program in Science (BSAP) and is based on the learning cycle approach. The stages of the learning cycle, examples of learning cycle lessons, development of science lessons that use a learning cycle approach, student assessment during the learning cycles, and classroom management of students when using the learning cycles are discussed.
