New York State Community Schools Pilot Project. Interim Report.

This report on the New York State Community Schools Pilot Project summarizes the project, focusing primarily on the Edwin Gould Foundation for Children's role in providing technical assistance, coordination, and support services. Between January and October of 1988, the Gould Foundation conducted the following activities: (1) organized a statewide advisory committee to assist and guide its role in the project; (2) hired a program officer and organized a technical assistance structure comprised of specialists and consultants from the Gould Foundation and the Regional Laboratory for Educational Improvement in the Northeast and the Islands; (3) carried out preselection and/or technical assistance visits to all 14 participating schools; (4) took major responsibility for organizing a spring retreat for representatives of the 14 schools; (5) circulated three newsletters to promote and encourage information-sharing and network-building; and (6) provided technical assistance, coordination, and support services to all 14 schools. Examples of reactions to the project from students, the news media, staff, elected officials, and administrators are included. The following materials are appended: (1) a calendar of events in the development of the project; (2) a list of eight community school features; (3) the spring retreat program; (4) a summary of participants' evaluation of the conference; (5) a list of preliminary program evaluation criteria and methods; and (6) a summary of key issues for the success of any community school project.
