This report on a spring retreat for participants in the New York State Community School Pilot Project emphasizes the need to develop and strengthen collaboration between schools and other organizations and individuals with widely diverse interests. Ninety-seven people attended, including representatives from each of the 14 school districts participating in the pilot project. The organizing theme of the retreat was "Forging Our Newtork for Change--Collaboration is the Key," and following accomplishments are reported: (1) clarification of the project's mission by advisory committee members, coordinators, principals, and superintendents; (2) sharing of experiences and plans, including an examination of programs in Syracuse, New York City, and Binghamton; (3) expansion of collaborative possibilities and resources; (4) preliminary identification of evaluation criteria and methods; and (5) evaluation of the conference. The following materials are appended: (1) the retreat program; (2) a list of eight features of community schools; (3) a report on the instructional model used in Syracuse; (4) a report on parental involvement programs in New York; (5) a report on early interventions and community linkages in Binghamton; (6) a copy of the retreat's evaluation questionnaire; and (7) an inventory of 1988/89 Social Services Request For Proposal Programs that support additional social services in community schools; and (8) a list of local school district contact persons for community schools initiatives.
