This collection of materials is designed to assist Indiana educators, administrators, and communities with the textbook selection process. Criteria for making such selections is outlined in the following articles: (1) "Laws, Rules, and Guidelines for Teaching Social Studies in Indiana" (Victor A. Smith); (2) "Indiana's Recommended Social Studies Curriculum" (Mary Fortney); (3) "Social Studies Textbook Adoption: Rationale, Procedures, and Interpretation" (James L. Barth); (4) "State-Wide Review of Textbooks" (Mary Fortney); (5) "Indiana State Textbook Adoption System, Social Studies, Textbook Evaluation Criteria, 1990"; (6) "Textbook Evaluation: The Supervisor's Perspective" (Mary Fortney); (7) "A Department Chair's Perspective" (William C. Clarke); and (8) "What Teachers Consider in Textbook Selection" (Evelyn R. Holt). Additional information is provided on readability formulas and policies/procedures for textbook adoption, as well as worksheets for use in reviewing textbooks during the selection process. The document also contains a statement on academic freedom, brief guidelines for controversial issues, and a statement on the goal of social studies education. (NL)
