Computer Education for Teachers of Young Children: A Developmentally Based Training Module.
This practicum was designed to solve a problem related to the provision of a computer training component for students enrolled in an early childhood education teacher training program. Increasing pressures on graduates of the training program to integrate computers and educational software into programs for young children as well as the students' interest in developing computer skills specifically related to early childhood education made it necessary to design a computer training module which could be integrated into existing classroom hours in a tightly scheduled training program. Previous experience, skill levels, and goals with respect to computer training were surveyed. A module of computer training was designed by means of which much of the content would be addressed through independent study, assignments, and projects. A computer laboratory component was included to facilitate hands-on experience and the evaluation of educational software. The focus of the module was on the selection and integration of developmentally appropriate software into the regular curriculum for young children, in order to promote children's progress in the affective, cognitive, and physical domains. Included are the introduction, study of the problem, anticipated outcomes, evaluation instruments, solution strategy, results, conclusions, and recommendations. Appended are a copy of the survey, a list of professional development courses on computer literacy, the course outline, a computer literacy game, a computer field report assignment, a computer module outline, a computer literacy handout, a curriculum chart outline, an example of a student's diagram outlining classroom arrangement of learning centers, software evaluation forms, a module test, a module evaluation form, and an inventory of software for the early childhood education computer education module.
