Opinions and Attitudes of Statewide Community College Students, June 1990. [2nd Biennial Community College Student Survey].
Michigan State Board of Education, Lansing. Project Outreach.
In June 1990, a statewide telephone survey was conducted of 1,200 full- and part-time students from the 29 Michigan community colleges as a follow-up to a similar survey conducted in 1988. As in the previous study, the 29 colleges were classified as rural, urban, and suburban institutions and a total of 200 part-time and 200 full-time students were contacted from each group. Study findings included the following: (1) 79% of part-time and 67% of full-time students stated that their primary reason for attending college was to improve their job prospects; (2) 91% of respondents felt they were getting their money's worth from community college while 95% said they would recommend a community college to a friend; (3) the percentage of students who had first applied to a four-year college dropped since the initial survey from 46% to 21% while those seeking an Associates degree dropped from 65% to 55%; (4) among reasons given for attending a community college, 42% sought university credit, 30% were preparing for a new job, and 15% were seeking to improve existing job skills; (5) 71% of respondents stated that they planned to re-enroll at the college in a subsequent semester, from 67% in 1988; (6) 65% of respondents indicated that they were performing better academically than they had in high school; (7) 58% of students said that the cost of tuition at the community college was very reasonable but 68% considered the cost of books to be unreasonable; and (8) both full-time and part-time students gave full- and part-time faculty high praise. Data tables and the survey instrument are included. (GFW)
