This unit has been created to provide experiences with the concept of adaptation. Adaptation can be defined as changes resulting from interactions of the needs of a species or cultural object and the opportunities presented by the environment. Most behaviors and physiological characteristics of plants are related to adaptation. An understanding of the concept of adaptation will help students interpret conditions they may encounter in the future. In this unit, students explore the concept of adaptation through a variety of activities, ideas and experiences. A field trip experience to Sanibel Island is featured. This set of documents includes an overview, objectives, a field trip guide for teachers, and four sections of activities. Appendices include the 4Mat model, an application of this unit to the 4Mat model, a cognitive pre/posttest, a sutdent book, a glossary, a discussion of scheduling considerations, and a parent permission form.
