The purpose of this community study unit is to help fifth grade students understand the pathways energy takes as it flows through several communities. Each of these communities are examined as working systems. The energy pathways are similar, but slightly different as the energy flows through the members of each community. The unit involves many activities including first-hand experiences, lectures, information-giving, and values searching. A field experience to a pine plantation and to the Lee County (Florida) Nature Center is featured. This set of documents includes an overview, objectives, a field trip guide for teachers, and four sections of activities. Appendices include the 4Mat model, an application of this unit to the 4Mat model, a cognitive pre/posttest, a student book, a glossary, a discussion of scheduling considerations, and a parent permission form.
