The Web of Life. Community Study Unit, Grade 3. Teacher Edition, Field Trip Guide for Teachers, and Student Edition.
Lee County School District, Ft. Myers, FL. Dept. of Environmental Education and Instructional Development Services.
The purpose of this community study unit is to introduce third grade students to the concept of the food web and to guide them in an investigation of the interrelationships among living things within a community. In the first section, students examine their own diets, and then extend this examination to the diets of some familiar animals. Classroom activities are provided to demonstrate the way a food chain is expanded to a more complex, interconnected food web. In section 2, the students are presented with the major portion of the content for the unit. The third section consists of a day-long field experience. The final section includes an examination of the data collected on the field trip. Included in this set of documents are an overview, objectives, teacher's guide, a field trip guide for teachers, and four sections of activities. Appendices include the 4Mat model, an application of this unit to the 4Mat model, a cognitive pre/posttest, a student guide to mudflat ecology, a glossary, a discussion of scheduling considerations, and a parent permission form.
