Financial Strain among Farmers and Its Influence on Their Geographic Mobility.
Rathge, Richard W.; And Others
Data from a random sample of North Dakota full-time farm operators were used to determine the influence of farmers' financial circumstances on their geographic mobility intentions. Telephone interviews in the spring of 1985 obtained 933 useable questionnaires for a response rate of 77%. The study explored the magnitude of financial strain faced by North Dakota farmers, the relationship between farmers' economic stress and their perceived ability to remain in farming, and farmers' mobility intentions in the context of their financial situation. Mobility was defined to encompass both migration and commuting, and mobility intentions were determined by responses to a question which asked farm operators where they would look for jobs if they were to quit farming. Discriminant analysis was used to explore how effective various measures of financial strain and characteristics of the farm operators were in distinguishing mobility intentions. No significant relationship was found between financial strain and mobility intentions among farmers. The variables which best distinguished between farmers' mobility intentions were residential size and years of residence in community. Cultural, ethnic, and family background considerations may be key variables to investigate in order to better understand the relationship between financial strain and geographic mobility.
