Ways in which semantic mapping can be used for general vocabulary development, as a prewriting and prereading activity, as a postreading activity, and as a study skill strategy are presented in this teaching guide. The first two sections provide an introduction to semantic mapping, and outline the three most common uses of semantic mapping as an instructional strategy. The third section presents classroom applications as follows: (1) a guided postreading activity--grade one; (2) a pre- and postreading vocabulary building and writing activity--grade one; (3) a prereading and vocabulary building activity--grade two; (4) a study skill strategy in science--grade five; (5) semantic mapping in music--grades two through five; (6) a pre- and postreading vocabulary building activity--grade six; (7) a pre- and postreading vocabulary building activity--grade eight; (8) a prewriting organizer--grade six; (9) a study skill in English class--grade eight; and (10) a study skill in history--grade seven. Examples taken from elementary and middle school classes in language arts, science, music, and history follow an objectives/procedure/comments format with supporting figures. A list of suggested readings on semantic mapping is included. (JD)
