Implementation of Activities for the Development of Affective Skills with Primary and Preschool Children.
Carlson, Sharon
This practicum was designed to reinforce the importance of meeting the needs of the whole child in the classroom--the social, emotional, and psychological needs, not just the intellectual needs. The practicum was implemented in the Montessori Learning Center, a small private preschool and elementary school located in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, by developing affective curriculum materials and providing training and assistance for teachers who implemented the curriculum materials in their classrooms. Specific goals of the practicum were to (1) help teachers examine their own attitudes about the need for affective education in the classroom; (2) provide affective resources that would familiarize teachers with the kinds of activities that could be used in the classroom; (3) encourage and guide teachers in the use of affective activities as a means of meeting the social, emotional, and psychological needs of students; (4) effect positive change in the behavior of children as a direct result of providing a program of affective education; and (5) help teachers recognize the value of affective education. Objectives of the practicum were met. Related materials are appended, including an affective activities curriculum guide. (RH)
