Project Graduation: A Celebration for Life. Tips on Starting a Tradition of Graduation Celebrations without Alcohol, Drugs, and Accidents!
Wright, David A.
Based on a program which was developed in Maine, this guide provides specific suggestions for establishing a new "tradition" of substance-free celebration at graduation and prom parties for high school students. An introduction discusses the dangers of drinking at high school parties, the benefits of alcohol and drug-free parties, and possible "spinoffs" of Project Graduation parties. Key elements of Project Graduation are listed (e.g., target groups, basic rules, suggestions for community support and planning groups), and examples of substance-free graduation and prom party possibilities are provided. A section on public awareness discusses ways to raise community and student conciousness about the problems of parties that provide alcohol. Methods of increasing student and parent interest and media involvement are listed, along with fund raising suggestions. A section on legal support issues, a list of ways to keep the party substance-free, a list of "miscellaneous success maximizers," and a list of local Iowa resources are also provided. Five appendices include: descriptions of Iowa Project Graduation parties, sample media releases and promotional letters, Iowa drinking and driving data, and excerpts from relevant Iowa law. (BH)
